John O'Hagan

Manistee County Sheriff

 

John joined the Manistee County Sheriff's Office in January, 1989 as a deputy sheriff.  In his capacity as deputy, he served as a D.A.R.E. Officer from 1994 until 2002.  He promoted to Sergeant in July 1999 for the Law Enforcement Services Division.  In March, 2007 he accepted the position of Undersheriff to retired Sheriff Dale Kowalkowski. In November,  2016, John campaigned successfully and was elected Manistee County Sheriff.

Graduate of Manistee Catholic Central (1985)

Associates Degree in Criminal Justice from West Shore Community College (1988)

Bachelor of Arts Degree from Spring Arbor University in Management & Organizational Development (2009).

Certified Field Training Officer (FTO) (2000)

Recipient of the "Excellence in Education Influential Person Award" from the Manistee County Community Foundation (2001)

Distinguished Service Award "Young Police Officer of the Year" from the Manistee Area Jaycees (2002)

Graduate of Law Enforcement Executive Leadership Institute (2003)

Graduate of Northwestern University's "School of Police Staff & Command" in Evanston, Illinois (2007)

 

COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT:

Board Member for the Child Advocacy Center in Manistee

Former volunteer AARP Instructor

Former 5th/6th Grade Girls Elementary Basketball Coach

Registered Sports Official with the Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) since 1985

Regular guest speaker for Level I & Level II Drivers Education Training (Manistee County)

 

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Oversees personnel managment functions of scheduling, work assignments, reviewing performance and dealing with employee related matters.

Monitors daily operations of assigned areas, confers with supervisory officers regarding incidents and problems, and ensures compliance with departmental rules, regulations, and policies.

Reviews reports of subordinate personnel and prepares regular reports of activities to the Sheriff.

Performs various administrative functions including preparing of budgets, writing grants, and overseeing programs and services offered by the Sheriff's Office.

Handles complaints from citizens and determines appropriate action to resolve the matters.

Coordinates departmental training for employees.

Oversees departmental equipment including vehicles, boats, radios, etc.

Attends meetings with various groups to explain policies and services and collect input on law enforcement issues.  Make presentations to schools, community organizations, and others.

Oversees and participates in maintenance of all records and reports, ensuring compliance with applicable stautes and regulations of various agenices.
